Down to the Sea

Brecon Beacons Tourist Authority

Brief

As part of VisitWales’ ‘Year of the Sea,’ we were commissioned by the Brecon Beacons Tourist Board Authority to create a series of animations that told the story of the canals and tramways within the region, as well as accompanying picture books, leaflets and maps.

As part of a suite of content to drive tourism within the UK, we needed to help families understand the links between the mountains and the sea, whilst juxtaposing the area’s industrial heritage with its natural beauty.

The hope was this would encourage them to plan a visit and make the most of the many varied attractions the region had to offer.

Approach

We produced four films that told unique stories of the tramways along the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal. Within these we showcased activities, places and wildlife that were unique to the region and there still to see today.

The films were created from stunningly illustrated 2D landscapes that highlighted the beauty and diversity of the region, the individual workings and utility of the tramroads, and how people lived and worked around the canal both in the past and present.

We used the design style from the films to inform the creation of walking maps, picture books and leaflets - all of which would form a wider suite of content the tourist authority could use.

Outcomes

The films were premièred in the local Brecon Theatre and have been used since in a wide range of marketing and PR activities, in addition to playing on screens throughout each individual visitor centre across the region. The accompanying maps and storybooks have been guiding visitors around the canals and pathways ever since!
